GIFT Nifty

The overnight lens on India’s Nifty 50. GIFT Nifty is a futures contract traded on NSE International Exchange at GIFT City, not the Nifty 50 spot index traded in Mumbai.

Where it trades

NSE International Exchange (NSE IX), at GIFT City in Gujarat. It is a US-dollar-denominated Nifty-linked futures contract.

When it trades

Extended weekday sessions cover much of the time outside regular NSE cash-market hours. Check the exchange calendar for holidays and session changes.

What it signals

A market expectation for the Nifty at a point in time, not a guaranteed opening level or a prediction of the day’s close.

The comparison

Futures versus spot

GIFT Nifty tracks expectations for the underlying Nifty 50 but futures and spot prices need not match. The difference can reflect the cost of carrying a position, dividends expected before expiry, the contract’s maturity and liquidity.

A headline that says “GIFT Nifty up 100 points” is incomplete without the reference price and contract month. Compare the same contract with its own prior close, rather than subtracting yesterday’s Nifty spot close and calling the result an opening gap.

Once India’s cash market opens, the actual Nifty 50 price is determined by trading in its constituent shares. Global news, currency moves and overnight US markets may all change the picture before the opening auction.

Before the bell

Three checks worth making

  1. 01 / CONTRACT

    Check the expiry

Near-month and next-month contracts can trade at different levels. Look at the contract you are actually comparing.

  2. 02 / TIME

    Check the timestamp

A quote captured before major news may no longer represent the latest market expectation.

  3. 03 / CONTEXT

    Check the drivers

A futures move alone does not explain company fundamentals or how individual sectors will perform.

This page does not display a GIFT Nifty price: a Nifty spot or other futures quote is not a substitute for an exchange-verified GIFT Nifty contract. For current levels and contract specifications, consult NSE IX directly.

Questions & answers

GIFT Nifty questions answered

Clear answers on GIFT Nifty meaning, NSE IX, the SGX Nifty transition, trading hours, futures basis and the limits of using it as an opening indicator.

What is GIFT Nifty?
GIFT Nifty is a Nifty-linked derivatives market on NSE International Exchange, or NSE IX, in GIFT City. The Nifty 50-linked contract is denominated and settled in US dollars. It trades for extended hours, so Indian market participants often watch it for overnight sentiment before the domestic cash market opens.
Is GIFT Nifty the same as the Nifty 50 index?
No. Nifty 50 is the underlying Indian equity index, while GIFT Nifty is a derivative linked to that index. Futures have an expiry and can trade above or below the spot index because of carry, expected dividends, time to expiry and market positioning. Compare like with like before calculating an implied gap.
Is GIFT Nifty the same as SGX Nifty?
GIFT Nifty is the successor to the offshore Nifty derivatives market historically associated with SGX Nifty. Under the NSE IFSC-SGX Connect, full-scale transition of the SGX Nifty derivatives business to NSE IX in GIFT City took place on 3 July 2023.
What are GIFT Nifty trading hours?
NSE IX's Connect FAQ states that market timings run from 06:30 a.m. to 02:45 a.m. the next day in Indian Standard Time, with product-specific timing details published by the exchange. Session structures and holidays can change, so current timings should be checked on NSE IX rather than copied from an old article.
Does GIFT Nifty predict the Nifty 50 opening?
It can indicate overnight market expectations, but it does not determine or guarantee the Nifty 50 opening. The futures basis, contract expiry, new global news and domestic pre-open orders can all change the relationship. Treat GIFT Nifty as a sentiment input, not as an exact opening-price forecast.
How should I calculate a GIFT Nifty opening indication?
First compare the current GIFT Nifty contract with a compatible Nifty reference, preferably after checking the futures basis and expiry. Do not simply subtract yesterday's Nifty 50 spot close and call the difference a guaranteed opening gap. The contract month, timestamp and overnight basis all matter.
What can move GIFT Nifty overnight?
Global equity moves, interest-rate expectations, currency moves, geopolitical events and news affecting large Indian companies or sectors can all change Nifty-linked futures expectations. The relevant driver can change from one session to another, which is why the latest timestamp and news context matter.
Where should I check the official GIFT Nifty price and contract details?
Use NSE IX for current exchange information, contract specifications, trading hours and market data. DeepScreen does not replace an exchange-verified GIFT Nifty contract with a domestic Nifty quote or a different futures series just to fill a live-price box.
